1 Thessalonians 5

The Day of the Lord

1Now as to the atimes and the epochs, brethren, you bhave no need of anything to be written to you. 2For you yourselves know full well that cthe day of the Lord
Lit is coming
will come ejust like a thief in the night.
3While they are saying, fPeace and safety!” then
Or sudden destruction
,
hdestruction
Lit comes upon
will come upon them suddenly like jlabor pains upon a woman with child, and they will not escape.
4But you, brethren, are not in kdarkness, that the day would overtake you
One early ms reads like thieves
,
mlike a thief;
5for you are all nsons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of odarkness; 6so then let us not psleep as
Lit the remaining ones
,
rothers do, but let us be alert and
Or self-controlled
,
tsober.
7For those who sleep do their sleeping at night, and those who get drunk get udrunk at night. 8But since vwe are of the day, let us wbe
Or self-controlled
sober, having put on the ybreastplate of zfaith and love, and as a aahelmet, the abhope of salvation.
9For God has not destined us for acwrath, but for adobtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 aewho died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. 11Therefore
Or comfort
encourage one another and agbuild up one another, just as you also are doing.

Christian Conduct

12But we request of you, brethren, that you
Lit know
,
aiappreciate those ajwho diligently labor among you, and akhave charge over you in the Lord and give you
Or admonition
instruction,
13and that you esteem them very highly in love because of their work. amLive in peace with one another. 14We urge you, brethren, admonish anthe
Or undisciplined
unruly, encourage apthe fainthearted, help aqthe weak, be arpatient with everyone.
15See that asno one repays another with evil for evil, but always atseek after that which is good for one another and for all people. 16 auRejoice always; 17 avpray without ceasing; 18in everything awgive thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 axDo not quench the Spirit; 20do not despise ayprophetic
Or gifts
utterances.
21But baexamine everything carefully; bbhold fast to that which is good; 22abstain from every
Or appearance
form of evil.

23Now bdmay the God of peace beHimself sanctify you entirely; and may your bfspirit and soul and body be preserved complete, bgwithout blame at bhthe coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 biFaithful is He who bjcalls you, and He also will bring it to pass.

25Brethren, bkpray for us
Two early mss add also
.

26 bmGreet all the brethren with a holy kiss. 27I adjure you by the Lord to bnhave this letter read to all the bobrethren.

28 bpThe grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
